The Static Electricity
Dollar Bill Effect
Claim that your body is an amazing conductor of static electricity
and that you can transfer that power at will. To demonstrate, you'll stand
a dollar bill on its edge and knock it down without touching it, simply
by moving the charge from your hand to the bill. Here's how it works.
Take a stiff dollar bill, fold it a little in the middle,
and put it on a table so that it stands on its own. Take your right hand,
rub it on your hand a bit, then rub your hands together vigorously. Now
make your right hand stiff like a paddle, with the fingers together. Move
it quickly toward the bill, crossing your body from left to right. Stop
sharply in front of the bill, with your fingertips pointing directly at
the bill as if you're discharging electricity from them. You never touch
the bill, but it will fall over.
When spectators try to duplicate the feat, invariably they
can't make the dollar move. Of course, your ability to make the dollar
fall has nothing to do with static electricity. The dollar will fall because
you've made your hand into a paddle and displaced enough air to knock
it down. Rubbing your hand or your hands together just serves to throw
your audience off. The key is the crossing action, which creates the air
displacement. Most people will believe it's the static electricity that's
knocking the bill down, as they'll be so concerned with rubbing their
hands together and making their right hand into a straight paddle that
they won't perceive the necessary crossing motion. They'll deliver a straight
karate chop toward the bill, displacing very little air, and the dollar
will still stand.
